For the last several decades, the sustained elevation of estradiol toward the end of the follicular phase was accepted as an ovulation trigger. The publication currently in press, provides compelling evidence that this was a misconception and the true physiological ovulation trigger is progesterone. The new theory has major implication for management of infertility.
