MSc/PGDip in Clinical Embryology

MSc/PGDip Clinical Embryology (Distance Learning). Leeds, UK

2 years/16 months Part-time Programme

The course was established in 2000, as the first web-based MSc degree course in Clinical Embryology. There is a new intake of students every October.

The course aims to provide a standard for education in embryology and an internationally recognised qualification, which will contribute to uniformity of knowledge in the subject and practice of embryology. Course management committee and module teachers include Prof Helen Picton, Dr Kay Elder, Dr. David Miller, Dr John Huntriss, Dr Matthew Cotterill, Dr Karen Forbes, Dr Niamh Forde and members of Leeds Fertility.

The course teaching faculty spans staff from the University of Leeds, Bourn Hall Clinic in Cambridge, Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust Assisted Conception Units, University of Manchester, University College London, and the University of Sheffield.

Enrolled students are provided with access to use a vast array of journals that are relevant to human assisted reproduction and reproductive biology, and many other relevant areas. These are provided by the University of Leeds Library. Students are also given University email accounts and access to the University Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).  All students are assigned a tutor, and another tutor is provided for the research project (Module 6) according to subject.

Course Content

The course is delivered via distance learning modules by internet, VLE, post and electronic mail. Three residential workshops, each lasting 5 days, will be held over the 2 year duration of the course. The rest of the programme is taken from a distance (i.e. studying at home).

Assessment will be split between assessed course work and formal examination, with Multiple Choice Questions, Short Answer Questions, Essays, and Case Studies.

The course will comprise the following compulsory modules:

  • Fundamentals of Clinical Embryology
  • IVF and Embryo Culture
  • Micromanipulation
  • Cryobiology and Cryopreservation
  • Ethics and Law for Embryologists
  • Research Project Proposal in Clinical Embryology (for Masters level)

Entry requirements: Typically an honours degree in a biological or related science however, applicants with appropriate or accredited experience within an embryological laboratory will also be considered.

Thanks for your interest in our programme. Yes, you may pay in instalments. If you are paying your fees personally, you can pay in four equal instalments, if you prefer. This means you would divide the normal two payments in half again so that one quarter of the total fee is paid in September and one quarter in February of the first year, then one quarter in September and in February of the second year. For sponsored students, the fee is split into two equal payments made at the beginning of each academic year in September. All details regarding fees for 2017 entry and payments are on the following link: https://courses.leeds.ac.uk/24932/MSc_Clinical_Embryology#section3
