Masters in Clinical Embryology:

• Effects of chemically define lipids on in-vitro fertilization and early development of mouse embryo.

Description: The study was based on the hypothesis that mouse embryo uses lipid as a source of energy during the early embryo development. The chemically defined lipid used in the study was a mixture of 8 different saturated and unsaturated fatty acids with surfactant and ethyl alcohol. A significant difference was seen in the blastocyst development rate. Thus chemically defined lipid could be used as a constituent of blastocyst culture media.

• Genetic Counseling in Diabetes (Complex disorder) and analysis of time gap in the occurrence of diabetic complication.

Description: Diabetes is a complex disorder following a complex pattern of inheritance; multiple gens are responsible for diabetes. In the study we looked into the family history of the patients with diabetes, their age of onset of the diabetes and also the age of onset of the diabetic complications. Early onset of the complications was seen in patients with strong genetic history and was also depended on the life style of the patient (environmental influence).

M.Sc., Medical Biochemistry:

  • To assess the effect of folic acid supplementation in patients with chronic periodontitis smokers and non-smokers.

    Description: Smoking is one of the major causes of periodontitis. Smoking generates free radicals which leads to lipid peroxidation hence increased levels of Malondialdehyde (MDA) and Myeloperoxidase ( MPO) activity and decreased protein-thiols levels, thus damaging the periodontium. Smokers with chronic periodontitis were given folic acid supplementation and the levels of MDA, MPO and Protein-thiols were recorded before and after the supplementation. Folic acid has an ability to improve periodontitis symptoms by reducing the oxidative stress and inflammatory response. Upon supplementation of folic acid, the levels of MDA and the activity of MPO decreased, thus indicating a reduction in the oxidative stress. Folic acid may be effective in reducing the oxidative damage and maintaining healthy periodontium.

  • Analysis of the pre analytical and post analytical error in clinical biochemistry laboratory before and after installation of laboratory information system and to assess the efficacy of pneumatic chute

    Description: 20,000 samples were analyzed for pre-analytical and post-analytical error before and after the installation of the Laboratory Information System (LIS) at Biochemistry laboratory, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. There was a significant decrease in the pre and post analytical error after installation of the LIS in the laboratory enhancing the quality of work.

  • To test whether intravenous iron has an oxidative effect by using various oxidative markers, including hs CRP, malondialdehyde, protein thiols and myeloperoxidase activity in pre- dialysis patient with chronic kidney disease.

    Description: In Chronic kidney Disease patients, anemia occurs due to inadequate iron absorption and increased erythropoiesis. This is due to human recombinant erythropoietin therapy which necessitates the need of intravenous iron therapy, thus increasing oxidative stress this may be involved in uremic toxicity in the patients.

    Hypothesis: Highly sensitive C-reactive protein, Malondialdehyde and Myeloperoxidase and protein thiols can be used as reliable markers for the oxidative stress in the patients with intravenous iron therapy and intravenous therapy can be avoided in such patients.
