The UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has announced new appointments, including four new members and one re-appointment.

Former BBC correspondent for Newsnight and Panorama, Margaret Gilmore, and journalist and author, Kate Brian, have been appointed as lay members. Brian is the editor of the Journal of Fertility Counselling and the London Regional Organiser at Infertility Network UK, as well as a member of the NICE fertility guidelines development group. She was previously a member of the advisory board for the One at a Time website.

Dr Anthony Rutherford and Dr Yacoub Khalaf, both consultants in reproductive medicine, will be appointed as professional members. Dr Rutherford is a consultant at Leeds Centre for Reproductive Medicine and is a member of the HFEA's Multiple Births Stakeholder Group.

Dr Khalaf is medical director of the Assisted Conception Unit at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital, London. He has acted as an external clinical advisor to the HFEA, a member of its licensing panel and advisor to the One at a Time multiple births campaign.

Dr Lee Rayfield, Bishop of Swindon, has been a member of the Authority since 2012 and has been reappointed. He is a former member of the UK Gene Therapy Advisory Committee and has published a number of scientific papers.

Sally Cheshire, chair of the HFEA, said: 'I am delighted that Kate, Tony, Margaret and Yacoub will be joining the HFEA Board to work with the experienced and talented team we already have in place.'

'We feel fortunate to be able to benefit from Tony and Yacoub's formidable and internationally recognised clinical skills, Kate's strong experience with patient groups and stakeholders across the fertility sector and Margaret's considerable communications and regulatory expertise.'

She continued: 'It also gives me great pleasure to announce the reappointment of Bishop Lee Rayfield. In the nearly three years that he has been an Authority member, Lee has always brought his unique combination of ethical and scientific expertise to bear on the wide range of issues placed before him.'

Brian and Dr Rutherford's appointments commenced in November 2014, while Gilmore and Dr Khalaf will start in April 2015. They will be paid at a rate of £7,883 per annum for a time commitment of three days per month.
