Polar body, Cleavage and Trophectoderm biopsy for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Workshop
Dr Joyce Harper, UCL Centre for PGD
23 June 2012

Date: 17th-18th September 2012

Aims of the course:

The programme will; provide embryologists with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of embryo biopsy. As well as lectures, the course will include hands on practicals and demonstrations including polar body, cleavage stage and blastocyst biopsy, tubing cells for molecular diagnosis, and spreading cells for FISH. All delegates will have a tour of the Centre for Reproductive and Genetic Health. During two days, delegates will have an extensive 'hands on' opportunity to practise embryo biopsy on mice embryos. It will also allow scientists to discuss the technology with their peers and with experts in the field.

As well as the lectures, additional information will be given in the form of copies of the Powerpoint presentations and a detailed workshop manual. All delegates are welcome to have follow-up discussions with UCL PGD and CRGH teams.

Objectives of the course

By the end of the course, all delegates should have increased their knowledge of embryo biopsy. They will have some experience of the practical aspects of these advances but to become competent in these procedures, they will have to develop proficiency testing in their own laboratories. All laboratory techniques will require regular competency tests to ensure they are effectively used in the clinical setting.

Continued Professional Development credits

The workshop has been awarded 10 CPD credits from the Royal College of Pathologists.
