Main purpose:

The post holder will manage the embryology, andrology and biochemistry laboratories in the absence of the Laboratory Manager. The post holder is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance within all laboratories and elevating any areas of non-compliance to the Laboratory Manager. The post holder will assist in the supervision and training of new members of staff, students and visitors. The post holder will also participate in research and service development under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager. The post holder will contribute to creating a positive working environment within the laboratory team that supports development, improvement and change.

 

 

Roles and responsibilities:

Clinical work

  • To perform all clinical embryology and andrology duties following appropriate training and competency assessment. Core clinical duties to include:
    • Diagnostic Semen Analysis and Semen Preparation for Treatment
    • Oocyte Collections
    • Insemination, including ICSI
    • Fertilisation Checks
    • Embryo culture to Day 5
    • Embryo Transfer
    • Cryopreservation/Thawing of gametes and embryos
    • Culture dish preparation
    • Blastocyst Biopsy
  • To oversee the procurement of laboratory products and services
  • To inform patients of treatment options, treatment outcomes and discuss the implications
  • To meet laboratory Key Performance Indexes for all critical laboratory tasks
  • To participate in internal and external QA, including UKNEQAS and Gamete Expert and achieve a satisfactory level of performance
  • To take part in the normal rota of duties, including weekend work, on-call rota, PIE and working bank holidays

Planning, administration, analysis and reporting

  • To plan laboratory work flow
  • To contribute to planning of clinical work schedules
  • To comply with regulatory requirements for documentation and record keeping.
  • To document all laboratory information accurately in patients notes, on Excel & IDEAs databases and HFEA forms
  • To collect and report laboratory statistical data accurately and completely as requested by the Laboratory Manager

Communication and cooperation

  • To create a positive working environment and motivate & encourage other members of staff
  • To commit to effective communication and cooperation within the laboratory team and other functional areas
  • To communicate effectively and politely with patients and oversee communications of other laboratory staff members
  • To obtain patient consent as required by regulation
  • To build good relationships with suppliers in order to ensure good service and to facilitate participation in trials

Research and development, continuous improvement, and quality management

  • To assist the Laboratory Manager and the Quality Manager in ensuring that the Quality Management System is updated and adhered to in the laboratory area
  • To conduct clinical audit and review the results
  • To be aware of laboratory performance in order to identify opportunities to improve the laboratory function
  • To comply with the requirements of the clinic QMS, HFEA, CQC and ISO certifying bodies.
  • To report non-compliance with regulations to line manager
  • To contribute to reducing the risk of future non-compliance
  • To be cooperative with the rest of the clinic so that it can meet the regulatory requirements

 

Knowledge, Training & Experience Required:

  • Life sciences degree, 2:1 or above
  • ACE Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma in Embryology or ESHRE Certificate
  • HFEA ICSI license
  • HCPC State Registered
  • A solid knowledge of the HFEA Code of Practice.
  • >10 years of clinical embryology experience
  • >5 years’ experience in a senior embryology role
  • Experience of quality management in the IVF laboratory
  • Experience of audit and writing SOP’s
  • Ability to review audit results and recommend and implement areas of improvement
  • An excellent understanding of the scientific basis of embryology and embryo culture
  • A good understanding of clinical aspects of reproductive medicine and infertility care
  • Ability to foster good working relationships within the embryology team and between other members of the GCRM team, both clinical and non-clinical.
  • Ability to teach other students and staff outside the embryology team as well as the general public regarding laboratory/basic science aspects of assisted conception
