Operating Department Practitioner Job Description

Post:                     Registered Nurse / Operating Department Practitioner

Hours:                        37.5 per week

Responsible to:        Clinical Nurse Manager

Accountable to:        Clinical Nurse Manager

The post holder must be either a registered ODP and therefore bound by the Health Professionals Council (HPC) codes or a nurse registered with the Nursing and Midwifery council.

Job Summary:          To work within both the nursing and multi-disciplinary team to provide evidence based, holistic care to a group of patients from admission to discharge within the department.


                            To take responsibility for managing and co-ordinating the theatre and recovery  area of the department.


                             To participate in the teaching and supervision of junior staff and Healthcare Assistants as well as student learners as required.


                             To be a safe and effective practitioner able to provide patients and their relatives with high quality peri-operative and post-operative care.

Clinical Practice:

  • To deliver a high standard of evidence based care to a specific group of patients.
  • To adhere to NMC or HPC code of Professional Conduct at all times.
  • To be responsible for the assessment of care required by patients in conjunction with other nursing and medical staff and with the co-operation of the patient and the relatives, using effective communication skills.
  • To be responsible for the implementation for the on-going evaluation of the effectiveness of the planned care and ensure that accurate and meaningful nursing records are maintained.
  • Provide skilled care to patients throughout the pre, peri and post operative journey.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • To act in accordance with Unit policies detailing ordering, storage, preparation and administration of medicines, ensuring a high degree of accuracy.


  • To participate in the implementation and audit of standards of care as required.
  • To ensure that practice is evidence based, within the guidelines of unit policies and procedures.
  • To ensure that nursing / ODP interventions reflect current research evidence available.
  • In conjunction with the Quality Manager instigate and audit ISO 0991-Quality Management Standards in defined clinical areas using relevant audit processes.

    Personal Development:

  • To identify a Personal Development Plan through annual appraisal / performance review with line manager.
  • To undertake a six month induction period and undertake any necessary competency programme.
  • To act as a mentor of student nurses / midwives and health care assistants, providing mentorship and clinical supervision as required.
  • To assist in developing and creating a suitable learning environment.
  • To develop appropriate clinical skills according to the Scope of Professional Practice (HPC 2004).
  • To take responsibility for own personal and professional growth and for maintaining a record of professional development experiences.


  • To take responsibility for the day-to-day management needs of the procedure rooms on a regular basis as designated by Senior managers and medical staff. 
  • To ensure effective and efficient use of resources and equipment, co-ordinate theatre / recovery activities, if required.

    Health and Safety:The post holder is expected to take reasonable care of her own health and safety and any other persons who may be affected by her acts or omissions. Unit policies and statutory regulations should be adhered to with particular regard to:-

Personal Specification

Recovery Nurse / Operating Department Practitioner


Education and qualifications

  • Registered ODP or Registered Nurse
  • Experience within recovery / theatre
  • Teaching / mentoring qualification

Experience and knowledge

  • Minimum of 2 years within gynaecology theatre
  •  Experience of leading practice initiatives
  • Management skills
  • Knowledge and experience of change management
  • Understanding of clinical governance and audit issues
  • Intravenous drug administration
  • Experience in nurse-led practice

Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to motivate self and others
