Physicians' Background

Dr. Mark P. Leondires

Dr. Mark P. Leondires, M.D.Medical Director and lead physician with Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut, Dr. Leondires is Board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Prior to joining RMA, he most recently served as the Director of Assisted Reproductive Technologies at the Combined Federal Program for Reproductive Endocrinology. While under his direction, the ART Program was one of the most successful in the Washington DC area and in the top tenth percentile nationally. During this time he was an Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and clinical faculty for the Combined Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology. His professional society memberships include the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

He received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and history from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, Vermont. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, which was followed by a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. After completion of his training, he fulfilled his military obligation by serving as the ART Director for the largest and most successful program in the military health care system at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Along with numerous teaching and research activities, Dr. Leondires has published numerous articles in professional medical journals, as well as abstracts and book chapters. His research interests include endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, the role of hormones in brain function, and reduction in higher-order multiple gestations.

Dr. Spencer S. Richlin

Spencer S. Richlin, M.D.Dr. Spencer Richlin is Surgical Director and a specialist in reproductive endocrinology at Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut. In addition, he is Division Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Norwalk Hospital. Dr. Richlin is Board Certified in both Reproductive Endocrinology and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Prior to joining RMA, Dr. Richlin served on the faculty of Loma Linda University School of Medicine, in California, as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics. He is a member of both the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

Dr. Richlin has published numerous abstracts, articles and book chapters, and is the lead author of the IVF section in Danforth's Obstetrics and Gynecology, 9th Edition. He coauthored with Dr Leondires the "Infertility" chapter in the text "Avoiding Common Errors in Obstetrics and Gynecology. This is due out in 2009.

Dr Richlin received his undergraduate degree in psychology from The University of California at Berkeley, and his medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He completed two internships, in Emergency Medicine and Obstetrics. Dr. Richlin served his residency at The Stamford Hospital in Stamford Connecticut from 1995-1999, where he was named Berlex Best Teaching Resident.

He then completed his subspecialty fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Emory University School of Medicine in Georgia. There he carried out research projects in in vitro fertilization and intrauterine lesions such as fibroids and polyps. There he wrote book chapters on abnormal uterine bleeding and endometrial ablation.

Dr. Joshua M. Hurwitz

Dr. Joshua M. HurwitzDr. Joshua Hurwitz is a staff physician and specialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at RMA-CT. He is board certified in both Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

He received his undergraduate degree in Biology & Society from Cornell University, and his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Dr. Hurwitz completed his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, also in Philadelphia. During residency training, Dr. Hurwitz was named Best Laparoscopic Surgeon, and has received many teaching awards.

Dr. Hurwitz completed a three year fellowhip in reproductive endocrinology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. During his fellowship, Dr. Hurwitz successfully launched several research programs related to reproductive aging and diminished ovarian reserve and has presented his research findings at many leading national and international fertility conferences. His research interests also include premature ovarian failure, oocyte cryopreservation, reproductive surgeries, embryo donation, and bioethics. He has published numerous abstracts, articles and book chapters on reproductive aging, reproductive hormones, IVF, ultrasound, and bioethics.

Dr. Hurwitz is a member of the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists, Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. He is also currently an Assistant Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Cynthia Murdock

Dr. Cynthia MurdockDr. Cynthia Murdock is a staff physician and a specialist in Reproductive Medicine & Infertility at RMA. She is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Dr. Murdock earned a BA in biology at Cornell University and an MD at Creighton University School of Medicine where she graduated magna cum laude. She completed her residency at Creighton University Medical Center where she was named Berlex Best Teaching Resident. In 2003 she completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the National Institutes of Health.

An experienced researcher, Dr. Murdock has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed studies and presented at several of the most prestigious conferences in the field of reproductive medicine. The focus of much of her research has been on estrogen receptors, hypothalamic neuron function, and precocious puberty.

Dr. Murdock is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Murdock was previously an assistant clinical professor at Creighton University School of Medicine and a staff physician with Reproductive Health Specialists at Nebraska Methodist Hospital. She has also served as an Assistant Professor of OB-GYN at the National Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Dr. Richard T. Scott, Jr.

Dr. Richard T. Scott, Jr., M.D., FACOG, HCLDDr. Scott is a national leader in IVF and one of only a handful of physicians who is certified by the American Board of Bio-analysis as a high complexity laboratory director. This makes him uniquely suited to integrate both the clinical and laboratory protocols in an IVF program. As Laboratory and Practice Director at RMA, Dr. Scott is responsible for IVF outcomes. While he does not see patients at RMA of Connecticut, all laboratory procedures and protocols are under his direction.

Dr. Scott is a founding partner of Reproductive Medicine Associates in Morristown, New Jersey. He completed his fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at the Jones Institute in Norfolk, Virginia, after receiving his M.D. degree from the University of Virginia Medical School. He was Clinical Director of the Reproductive Endocrinology Fellowship Program at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, and previously founded the first IVF program in the federal government at Wilford Hall Medical School in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Scott has completed more than 15,000 IVF cycles. He is an award winning researcher and author of more than 200 scientific papers and abstracts, serves as a reviewer for more than a dozen peer review journals, and has lectured on his research to reproductive endocrinologists worldwide. He has received more than a dozen awards for excellence in clinical and laboratory research. Dr. Scott is a recognized leader in the areas of ovulation induction for assisted reproduction, implantation, ovarian reserve screening, and oocyte donation.

Dr. John J. Stangel

Dr. John J. Stangel

During his 30 years of practice in Rye, NY, Dr. Stangel has been a leader in the community as well as a primary in the fertility industry.  In 2002 he teamed up with Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT) by becoming the fertility practice’s Westchester County Medical Director.

Since going into private practice in 1976, Dr. Stangel has received recognition for his published papers and work with patients.  In 2009, Westchester magazine recognized his impact on the community by naming him a “Top Doc” in its annual issue. “I was honored to be included in Westchester magazine’s ‘Top Doctors 2009’ – especially because this is based on input from my peers,” said Dr. Stangel.

These accolades come after an impressive infertility career that began when he traveled to Australia to investigate a radical new fertility treatment – in-vitro fertilization (IVF).  His interest in the field continued as he worked with patients in the United States, rounding out his education that included doing graduate work at Syracuse University, attending New York Medical College, completing his residency at Mount Sinai and studying microsurgery at London’s Hammersmith Hospital for two years.  Dr. Stangel is a charter member of both the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists and the Society of Reproductive Surgeons.

Dr. Stangel is President of Westchester Medical Society and serves on the staffs of Northern Westchester Hospital and Phelps Memorial in Sleep Hallow, NY.  Some of Dr. Stangel's former positions include: Clinical Director of Reproductive Medicine, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health Montefiore Medical Center at The University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine; Medical Director of IVF America Program Westchester in Port Chester, NY; and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at New York Medical College at Metropolitan Hospital in NY and at Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla, NY  Dr. Stangel is the editor and contributing author of the textbook, 'Infertility Surgery'. He has published numerous scientific papers and articles and has contributed to many textbooks. Dr. Stangel has also authored a laymen guide to infertility entitled, 'The New Fertility and Conception'. His most recent book, co-authored with Joan Liebman-Smith, Ph.D., and Jacqueline Nardi Egan, is 'The Unofficial Guide to Overcoming Infertility', published by Macmillan. He has also lectured widely in the United States and abroad.
