Fertility Nurse Specialist

Main purpose:

The post holder will provide clinical support to all patients at Boston Place Clinic and 92 Harley Street and work within the terms of the HFEA Code of Practice, NMC Professional Code of Practice and Care Quality Commission Standards. The post holder must understand the levels of confidentiality expected during their work within the unit. The post holder should have the ability to work unsupervised and in an organised, professional manner.

Key responsibilities:

  • To discuss treatment options with patients as required
  • Patients treatments are performed accurately and efficiently as per clinical competencies
  • To inform patients of treatment outcomes and discuss the implications
  • Implications counselling
  • Responsibility that own patient case load is managed effectively and follow through following the patients nurse co-ordination talks
  • Ensure documentation is completed on IDEAS all electronic checklists and alerts filled in as appropriate
  • Ensure telephone calls are dealt with correctly, appointments booked and messages returned the same day
  • Ensure that liaison within in the team is timely and efficient
  • Assist with Phlebotomy as required
  • Assistance is given to doctors / senior nurses in specialised treatment
  • Able to set up and assist with all procedures in the theatre room and discuss procedure and risks with patients
  • Able to recover patients post operatively after their procedure and discuss all aspects of their care and discharge patient safely
  • Able to set up and assist with embryo transfers and discuss appropriately with procedure the procedure and the policy of elective single embryo transfer
  • Able to scan during the embryo transfer procedure competently
  • Comply with professional registration (NMC) and PREP requirements
  • Confidentiality is maintained
  • HFEA Code of Practice and licence conditions are adhered to
  • To be proactive in ensuring that risk management procedures and best practice procedures are in place and adhered to with the clinical department
  • Any other duties required by management are completed
  • To manage clinical resources in the most cost-effective way
  • All clinical equipment used is kept in good order
  • Clinical stock is managed effectively
  • To ensure that the clinical forms and confidential patient records are accurately updated and maintained for all treatment cycles and inputted and scan all documents into IDEAS making us paper light
  • To ensure that the clinical data is accurately collected and complete for the HFEA EDI data base
  • To ensure statistical data is maintained on a regular basis
  • To participate in Patient Open Evenings
  • Ensure new staff are trained to a competent level
  • To take part in all training opportunities including in-house counselling and CPR sessions
  • Personal annual leave, appointments and training courses are documented correctly
  • Unit meetings and nurse meetings are attended minutes are read on absence from such a meeting
  • Email/ telephone calls are dealt with on receipt
Experience Required:  Minimum one years’ experience in IVF/ Fertility setting. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and patients over the telephone, face-to-face. Excellent time management skills and interpersonal skills. Ability to work flexible hours and on call weekends to meet service needs. Demonstrate understanding of national and local guidelines and policies relating to fertility care. Ability to work to deadlines. Commitment to delivering a high-quality patient experience. Flexible and self-motivated. High level of resilience. Be a team player and able to work independently. Knowledge of IDEAS website desirable but not essential. Communication with colleagues, patients and visitors should be clear, effective and polite. Professional and courteous behaviour is expected at all times. 
Education Required:  Educated to Higher Level Registered Nurse NMC registration
